Do people in China not respect animals?

They eat dogs in China. They raise them in cages and then cut off their paws because they're served with sauce. Whatever else you may buy from China, don't buy your food from there. You have no idea what's really in it. They feed farm animals with their own feces, for example. Not to mention the cheap antibiotics they pump them full of to keep them from getting sick.
