Newborn sick [in his nose maybe chest]?

My son is 18 days old and seems to have a cold i dont know if its in his nose or in his chest, i called my mom and she said if i think its in his chest i should take him to the doctors. i've been using the suction bulb thing to get his boogies out but there doesnt seem like there is a lot. [ i do have a sore throat do u think i got him sick] is there anthing i can do? i know doctors dont like to get babies meds. i feel like he cant breathe properly through his nose because of his cold. any advise is helpful thanks
