How soon after umbilical stump falls off can you give newborn a bath?

The answer to this question really depends on where you are in the world. I'm in the UK and we were told we could bath our son from day one and it didn't matter about it getting wet. We bathed him twice (cord and all) and it fell off fine exactly one week after he was born.
