How on earth does one add contacts to yahoo messenger,i have tried and tried ty?

I type in the addy,hit add and nothing,as you may have guessed im new to yahoo and find it complicated after using windows hotmail(which ive lost lol)if anyone can explain to me how to add contacts without them dissapearing into the abys i will be very grateful.cie
