21, single, pregnant. Welfare?

When I was pregnant with my first child, I went to apply for WIC and state insurance (I had just lost my job) I lived with my parents and all they asked me was how much I make a month and how much my parents helped me out. Because you are over 18 and pregnant you are considered a family on your own so your parents income should not apply for you to get public istance.
